The Marist College women's lacrosse team started Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Lacrosse League at Fairfield University on Saturday, falling 15-14, despite a frantic second half comeback. The Stags improve to 4-5 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the Red Foxes drop to 2-3 on the year and 0-1 in conference action.
The Stags took a 13-8 lead on a Sarah Masterson goal with 19:34 to play in the game, but the Red Foxes would answer with three straight in a six-minute span to close to within 13-11. Ali Carnabuci started the run with an unassisted goal at 19:20, and then Liz Falco scored twice, 16:46 and 13:45, to start the run. Fairfield's Amy Neville scored 21 seconds later to make the deficit three goals, but again the Red Foxes rallied.
Lindsay Diener scored her two goals nine seconds apart, at 9:01, and at 8:52, after winning the draw control, to make the Fairfield lead 14-13. Neville again gave the Stags an insurance goal, one they would need, at the 1:44 mark. Carnabuci scored at 1:15 to make it 15-14, but the Red Foxes could not get the tying tally.
Fairfield goalkeeper Lauren Chatnik was spectacular in goal making 17 saves on the day. The save total equaled her career-high, which game against Canisius in the 2006 MAAC Semifinals. Liz Burkhard minded the net in the first half for Marist, allowing 10 goals and making four saves. Kyle Jansky was in goal in the second half, making six saves, and allowing only five goals.
Falco led all scorers touching net six times in the game. Diener finished with three points, scoring twice and adding an assist. Carnabuci had two goals, while Carolyn Sumcizk had a goal and an assist. Kate Noftsker and Jessica O'Brien both tallied goals for Marist, while Stephanie Garland and Lindsay Rinefierd both had an assist.
Neville paced the Stags offense with four goals on the afternoon. Kylee Martin had three goals, while Erin Rigby and Kristen Ryan, who also had one assist, each scored twice. Rebecca White had a goal and two assists for three points.
Marist will host Binghamton on March 27 at 1 p.m.
