KINGSTON, N.Y. - The Marist women's lacrosse team continued its explosive offensive week by tying the single-game program record for goals scored in its 22-11 win over Iona at Dietz Stadium on Sunday. The Red Foxes also set a program record for points in a game with 35, tallying a total of 13 assists.
It marked the third consecutive game the Red Foxes scored at least 20 goals, following a 21-goal performance against Binghamton on Tuesday and a 20-goal output at Manhattan on Friday. Prior to this week, Marist had never had back-to-back 20-goal games. The Red Foxes have now won three consecutive games, tying the program record for longest winning streak.
A pair of Red Foxes tied for the team high with six points - junior attacker Ali Carnabuci (Albertson, N.Y.) and junior midfielder Lindsey Diener (Nanuet, N.Y.). Carnabuci scored six goals on six shots, and Diener finished with four goals and two assists. Diener's second goal of the day, which came with 27:29 left in the second half, made her the third player in program history to score 100 career goals. Diener also led all players with 14 shots, eight of which were on goal.
Freshman midfielder Liz Falco (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) opened the scoring with the first of her five goals just 58 seconds into the contest. On the strength of two goals apiece from Falco, sophomore midfielder Cristin Begley (Brookville, Md.) and freshman midfielder Lindsay Rinefierd (Smithtown, N.Y.), the Red Foxes jumped out to a 6-1 lead with 22:31 left in the first half. After the Gaels fired back with three straight goals, the Red Foxes answered with six straight, with three coming from Carnabuci in that span. Marist took a 16-8 lead into halftime, and outscored the Gaels 6-3 in the second half.
For the game, Marist outshot Iona by a 45-23 margin. The Red Foxes also held a 22-17 advantage in ground balls, with sophomore midfielder Stephanie Garland (Long Valley, N.J.) leading the way by scooping up three. Garland also led the team with three assists on the day.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kyle Jansky (Bethpage, N.Y.) stopped three shots in the first half to earn the victory, improving to 3-0 on the season. Junior goalkeeper Liz Burkhard (Wantagh, N.Y.) came in for the second half and stopped five shots.
With the victory, Marist improved to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Lacrosse League play. Iona fell to 4-4 overall and 0-2 in the MAAC with the loss. MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Jaclyn O'Leary led the Gaels with three goals and an assist. Christie Godlewski added three goals for Iona.
Marist will return to action on Saturday with a 3 p.m. contest at Boston College.
