WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. --- Marist guard Jared Jordan was named winner Tuesday of the 74th Haggerty Award as the 2006-07 All-Met Division I men's college basketball player of the year, presented by the National Invitation Tournament and the Met Basketball Writers Assocation. Marist head men's coach Matt Brady also won the Peter A. Carlesimo Coach of the Year award.
Backcourt mate Will Whittington was also named to the All-Met second team, while Rachele Fitz (Seven Hills, Ohio) did likewise on the women's side.
A senior guard from Hartford, Conn., and the MAAC player of the year, Jordan led the nation in assists for the second straight season, totaling 286 for an 8.7 apg average. He also had 17.2 ppg, 5.9 rpg and a team-leading 45 steals. He finished as the all-time school assists leader with 813.
Whittington led the nation in 3-pointers made (127) and was second in 3-pointers per game (4.0). He finished his career 15th all-time in NCAA history with 362 3-pointers made.
In his third season at the helm, Brady guided the Red Foxes to a 25-9 record, a program record for victories, and the program's first-ever outright Metro Atlantic regular season title (14-4). Marist advanced to the second round of the NIT after knocking off Oklahoma State in the first round 67-64.
Fitz ranked 15th in the country in field goal percentage (56.9) and 86th in free throw percentage (81.3). Kresge was 21st in the nation in assists per game (5.4).
As a team, the Marist women won a school record 29 games and became the first MAAC school (men's or women's) to advance to the Sweet Sixteen, after knocking off fourth-seeded Ohio State and fifth-seeded Middle Tennessee State. The Red Foxes finished 22nd in the final ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll.
