Final Stats
KINGSTON, N.Y. - Sophomore Stephanie Garland (Long Valley, N.J.) scored five goals in her second straight game as the Marist Women's Lacrosse team downed Niagara (1-8, 0-4 MAAC) 19-6 at Dietz Stadium in Kingston, N.Y. Garland led all scorers in the game with seven points and junior Caitlin Bergin (Rumson, N.J.) scored her first career goal for the Red Foxes who improved to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in the MAAC.
Marist got on the board at the 25:39 mark of the first half on a goal by Ali Carnabuci (Albertson, N.Y.), her first of three in the game. Marist and Niagara would alternate goals, with the Purple Eagles knotting the score at 2-2 on a goal by Emma-Lee Harrison at 18:56. Following the goal by Harrison, Marist would close out the half by scoring the last nine goals. Garland would score three of her five in the span, including the last of the half with just 31 seconds remaining. Marist held a 11-2 edge at the intermission.
Carnabuci opened the scoring in the second half with a goal at 28:34. Harrison tallied at 26:28 to pull Niagara within 12-3, but nine goals would be as close as Niagara would get the rest of the contest. Following the Harrison goal, Marist would score the next five, with Garland picking up two. After three goals by Niagara, junior Lindsey Diener (Nanuet, N.Y.) and freshman Lindsay Rinefierd (Smithtown, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring to give Marist the final 19-6 advantage.
Marist had five players score at least two goals, including Garland's five. Carnabuci scored three times and Liz Falco (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), Rinefierd and Megan White (Copiague, N.Y.) all found the back of the net twice for the Foxes.
Carolyn Sumcizk (Syosset, N.Y.) led six Marist players with at least two assists, helping on three goals.
For the game, Marist held the advantage in shots at 41-25, ground balls at 29-24 and draw controls 17-10. The Red Foxes were successful on 19 of their 23 clear attempts in the contest.
Liz Burkhard (Wantagh, N.Y.) got the win in net, making four saves and allowing just two goals in the first half. Kyle Jansky (Bethpage, N.Y.) came on in the second and also made four stops for Marist.
Marist will look to run its winning streak to three games when it takes on Canisius Saturday, April 14 at 6 p.m. in Kingston, N.Y. Please note that this is a schedule change. Tomorrow evening's game will be played at Dietz Stadium. Senior Day festivities will precede the game.
