FLUSHING, N.Y. - The top-seeded Marist women's tennis team cruised to a 7-0 victory over fourth-seeded Loyola on Saturday to advance to the final of the 2007 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championships. The Red Foxes, who have now reached three consecutive MAAC finals, will face second-seeded Niagara for the championship at 11 a.m. on Sunday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
The Red Foxes did not drop a set in singles against Loyola, and captured two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Junior Erin Godly (Little Silver, N.J.) rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win at third singles, and senior Megan Gureck (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at fourth singles.
With the win, the Red Foxes captured their 11th consecutive match and improved to 12-1 on the season. Marist will be trying to earn its first MAAC crown on Sunday against Niagara. The teams met in the regular season just this past Sunday, with the Red Foxes earning a 5-2 road victory. Marist and Niagara also met in the 2005 MAAC final, with the Purple Eagles earning a 4-2 triumph.
