April 29, 2007

Final Stats

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Le Moyne's Amanda Keegan scored the game-winning goal with 1:57 remaining in the first overtime period, as the Dolphins earned a 14-13 victory over Marist in the 2007 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Lacrosse League championship game on Sunday at Mazzella Field on the campus of Iona College. Sophomore midfielder Cristin Begley (Brookville, Md.) led the Red Foxes with four goals on the day.

Junior midfielder Lindsey Diener (Nanuet, N.Y.) and sophomore midfielder Stephanie Garland (Long Valley, N.J.) each finished with three goals and an assist. Freshman midfielder Lindsay Rinefierd (Smithtown, N.Y.) also had a four-point afternoon with a goal and three assists.

Freshman midfielder Liz Falco (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) opened the scoring just 2:03 into the contest with her 50th goal of the season. Two goals apiece from Diener and Garland along with one from Begley propelled the Red Foxes to a 6-1 lead just 11:59 into the first half. Although the Red Foxes would score just one more goal the remainder of the half, they received strong goalkeeping from junior Liz Burkhard (Wantagh, N.Y.) as they took a 7-3 lead after the first 30 minutes. Burkhard turned aside eight shots in the first half.

Following two more goals from Begley and another one by Diener in the first 3:32 of the second half, the Red Foxes expanded their lead to 10-3. After Le Moyne's Emily Donnells cut the Marist advantage to 10-4 with 25:23 left, goals from Begley and sophomore midfielder Carolyn Sumcizk (Syosset, N.Y.) gave the Red Foxes their largest lead of the game at eight, as they led 12-4 with 22:01 to play.

Le Moyne (15-4) answered with three consecutive goals, but Rinefierd scored with 11:41 to play to put Marist up 13-7. The Dolphins responded with three goals in a 49-second span to cut the Red Foxes' lead to 13-10 with 10:18 left. Two more goals by Le Moyne brought the Dolphins to within one, and McKenzie Gray tied the score with an unassisted goal with 50 seconds remaining in regulation.

Keegan scored the only goal in the two three-minute overtime periods on a free position shot with 1:56 left in the first overtime session. Kylie Rosette led Le Moyne with seven points on four goals and three assists, and Lisa McCarthy tallied three goals and two assists. The championship gave the Dolphins the crown in back-to-back years and made it four in six years.

With 10 wins, the Red Foxes enjoyed their winningest season in program history. Four Red Foxes - Burkhard, Falco, Sumcizk and sophomore defender Caitlin Schuh (Columbia, Md.) were named to the MAAC All-Tournament team.
