CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-The Marist women's tennis team fell to 11th-ranked North Carolina 4-0 Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Red Foxes finished their season 13-2 overall.
The Tar Heels (22-8) captured the doubles point with victories at Nos. 3 and then 1. UNC's Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long, the nation's second-ranked doubles team, defeated Marist's Christine Ong (Tarzana, Ca.) and Cassie Strange (Valencia, Ca.) 8-0 at No. 1. Austin Smith and Meg Fanjoy were also victorious by a score of 8-1 at No. 3 over Marist's Emily Zampello (Kingwood, Tx.) and Mirelva Colon (Bayamon, Puerto Rico).
In singles, Carolina's Katrina Tsang knocked off Strange 6-0, 6-0, Anundsen defeated Marist's Megan Gureck (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) 6-2, 6-0 and Laura Reichert knocked off Colon 6-0, 6-1.
The trip was Marist's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
