STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The Marist football team suffered a 24-14 loss to Wagner in a road contest on Saturday, as the Red Foxes fell to 0-3 on the season. Inside linebacker Dan Smith (Reston, Va.) led Marist with 11 tackles, including two-and-a-half for losses.
The Red Foxes outgained the Seahawks in total yards, 336-240. Senior running back Adam Hansen (Monroe Township, N.J.) and junior running back Ray Fiumefreddo (Wayne, N.J.) led the Red Foxes with 55 yards rushing apiece, and senior wide receiver Tim Keegan (Middlebury, Conn.) caught five passes for 72 yards.
Wagner got off to a 24-0 lead before the Red Foxes scored the game's last 14 points. The Seahawks got on the scoreboard first with 3:45 left in the first quarter, as a 16-play, 45-yard drive culminated in a 39-yard field goal by Piotr Czech. In the second quarter, quarterback Matt Abbey hit Joe Kinard with a 29-yard touchdown passes two plays after Marist quarterback Stephen McGrath (Manasquan, N.J.) was intercepted.
The Seahawks took the 10-0 lead into the half, and made it 24-0 with two touchdowns in less than two minutes early in the third quarter. On the first play following a fumble recovery, Abbey's 39-yard touchdown pass to Lon Woods made it 17-0. Then, Wagner's Keith Heaney recovered a blocked punt in the end zone to give the Seahawks a 24-0 advantage with 11:24 left in the third quarter.
Marist answered on its next drive as Fiumefreddo's one-yard touchdown run capped an 11-play, 80-yard drive. Although the extra point was no good, Marist cut its deficit to 24-6 with 6:11 remaining. With 22 seconds left in the third period, McGrath found senior wide receiver Daniel Dulac (Newington, Conn.) for a 13-yard touchdown. McGrath then completed a pass to sophomore wide receiver Will Brown (Windsor, Conn.) for a two-point conversion, making the score 24-14. However, neither team scored in the fourth quarter, as two Marist drives ended in a turnover on downs.
McGrath finished the day with a career-high 40 attempts, completing 16 of them for 170 yards. For Wagner, Abbey was 12-for-26 for 145 yards, and running back Jason Butler ran for 100 yards - 82 of which came in the fourth quarter - on 24 carries. With the win, Wagner improved to 2-1.
The Red Foxes will return to action at Columbia next Saturday at 12:30 p.m. It will be Marist's first game in program history against an opponent from the Ivy League.
