POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - On Monday, Dec. 8, first year head coach of the men's lacrosse team, Scott Nelson announced the signing of 12 players to join the team for the 2009-2010 academic year. The Red Foxes will add four midfielders, four defensemen, three to the attack and one goalkeeper to the roster.
"We are extremely excited about this class and feel that we have a very talented group of players coming in," Nelson said. "This class will help our overall athleticism as a program and is balanced with skilled players at each position. Although we had a late start, the success that we have had with this class shows what a great opportunity Marist College and our lacrosse program present to student-athletes."
A defender, Brendan Brunelle joins the Red Foxes out of Yorktown High School. The Yorktown, N.Y., native played football, basketball and lacrosse during his years as a Cornhusker. His lacrosse team has reached the New York State semi-finals the past two seasons, while the 6-foot-1-inch defender was named All-Section after his junior year. He was also an alternate for the Empire State Games last summer. Brunelle is also a two-time All-Section selection in football.
Vincent Chiodo comes to Marist out of Garden City High School, after he spent three seasons on both the varsity soccer and lacrosse teams. A midfielder, Chiodo has totaled 38 points behind 22 goals and 16 assists at Garden City High. A Garden City, N.Y., native, his high school team was named Nassau County Class B Champions in 2007 and 2008. Academically, Chiodo has been named to the Principal's List.
Matthew Dugan, a Cortland, N.Y. native comes to Marist after he played at the Christian Brothers Academy (CBA) Syracuse. In addition to lacrosse, the 5-foot-10-inch midfielder also played football and basketball. In 2007 his team was crowned Section III Class C Champs. Last season Dugan was named Second Team All-League and CBA Varsity Lacrosse Unsung Hero after he scored 28 points during the season. A face-off specialist, Dugan has won 75 percent of the draws he has taken in his career.
Ethan Fox will continue his career with high school teammate Brunelle at Marist. The defenseman has been named All-Section, All-League and a two-time captain at Yorktown High School. A member of the National Honor Society and High Honor Roll, Fox has played in the Empire State Games twice. In addition to playing four years of lacrosse, the Yorktown, N.Y., native played three years of basketball as well.
Aedan Herman joins the Red Foxes as a two-sport athlete at Colonial Forge High School in Stafford, Va. The 5-foot-11-inch, 180 pound attack has totaled 174 points and 125 ground balls in three seasons with his high school team. He has been named All-District first team twice, All-Region first team once and was nominated for All-American status this past season. Herman will follow in his father's foot steps in playing for the Red Foxes. Thomas Herman was a member of the Marist track team and graduated with the class of 1975.
Shane Jaeger is one of six new Red Foxes that played varsity lacrosse in all four years of high school. An attack man, Jaeger had his most impressive season last year after he scored 42 goals and dished 28 assists. The Ellicott City, Md. native plays for Centennial High School which was named 2008 Regional Champions. Individually, Jaeger was named Honorable Mention All-County in 2007 and Second Team All-County in 2008. He is a two-time student-athlete of the month at Centennial High School in addition to being named to the Honor Roll.
Jim Marks comes to the Red Foxes as an accomplished three-sport athlete from West Genesee High School in Syracuse, N.Y. A football, basketball and lacrosse player, Marks' football and lacrosse teams were named New York State Champions in 2007 and 2008. The 6-foot-1-inch midfielder was named All Central New York First-Team Quarterback and the Section III Player of the Year by News Channel 10. Last season on the lacrosse field, he totaled 11 points behind seven goals and four assists, and was a finalist to appear in the Empire State Games for lacrosse. Marks has been a regular member of the West Genesee High School Honor Roll and a member of the National Honor Society.
A defender out of Brewster, N.Y., TJ McDermott will join the Red Foxes as a three sport athlete from Brewster High School. The 6-foot-2-inch defender played four years of football, three years of lacrosse and two years of basketball. A member of the honor roll at Brewster High School, McDermott received All-League Honorable Mention Honors in 10th grade and All-League in 12th grade for football, a year in which his team won the league.
Patrick Kurowski, a goalie joins the Marist lacrosse program after he played for the second-ranked high school in the country, the Loyola Blakefield boy's lacrosse team, and the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) champs from 2005-2008. The Phoenix, Md. native was named to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) National Young Guns Team in 2007.
A 5-foot-9-inch midfielder, Michael O'Hagan from Yonkers, N.Y., will have played four years of varsity lacrosse at Iona Prep. In his sophomore and junior seasons, he totaled 96 goals and 108 assists for a total of 204 points. He was named first team All-League the past three seasons, an All-American in 2008 and an alternate for the Empire State Games, while his team was named Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) Champions in 2007 and 2008. Additionally the Iona Prep boy's lacrosse team won the New York Metro Lacrosse Championship in 2008. A first team All-League Selection at linebacker, O'Hagan's football team won the league championship in 2008.
Connor Rice comes to Marist with an impressive lacrosse resume from Penfield High School in Penfield, N.Y. During his time at Penfield, the Fairport, N.Y., native has won three Monroe County Championships (2005, 2006, 2008), while they advanced to win the Section V Championship in 2006. Individually, Rice has been named team MVP, first team All-County, first team All-Greater Rochester, Monroe County Player of the Year, Section V Player of the Year, a High School All-American, and an Adidas All-American in 2008. After the 2006 campaign, the attack man was named first team All-County and to the All-Tournament Team. He was chosen as an alternate for the Empire State games following his sophomore year, and was chosen to the team following his junior year. Rice is also a three-time New York State Scholar Athlete. He has 192 points during his three seasons with Penfield.
Patrick Wall will join the Red Foxes after playing three seasons of varsity lacrosse at Cold Spring Harbor High School. The 6-foot-3 defender is a three-sport athlete, lettering in soccer, basketball and lacrosse. After his junior season, Wall was named All-Conference, honorable mention All-County in Nassau County and a New York State Public School Athletic Association (NYSPSAA) scholar athlete. His high school team, the Seahawks, is two two-time defending Nassau County Class C champions.
The Marist men's lacrosse team will open the 2009 season on Feb. 28 when the Red Foxes play host to the Vermont Catamounts.
