FORT COLLINS, COLO. - The Marist women's water polo team finished the Hilton Invitational in second place with a 3-2 record. Sophomore driver Kristen Barnett (Houston, Texas) led the Red Foxes with five goals on the day as Samantha Swartz (Harleysville, Pa.) added three goals.
Marist started the day taking on the host Colorado State. After the Red Foxes took a 2-1 lead after the first quarter, Marist pulled away with four goals in both the second and third quarter to take a commanding 10-6 lead. Each team added one tally in the fourth quarter to make the final score 11-7. Swartz had a hat trick to lead Marist, as Barnett, Maggie Hatcher (Evanston, Ill.), and Angie Rampton (Simi Valley, Calif.) each had a pair of goals in the win.
The day concluded with a game against Bucknell. The Bison defeated Marist 12-6 on Saturday, and the Red Foxes looked to even up. The two teams played to a 4-4 halftime tie, and Marist got within a goal after the third quarter, trailing 8-7 into the fourth. In the deciding quarter, Bucknell outscored the Red Foxes 4-1 to win 12-8. Barnett had a hat trick in the game, as Hilary Schroeder (Santa Barbara, Calif.) had a pair of goals.
Marist (3-2) returns home to take on the New York Athletic Club on Sunday, February 17 for a pair of games at the McCann Center Natatorium. The action begins at Noon.
