LEWISBURG, PA. - The Marist women's water polo team earned a pair of wins at the ECAC Water Polo Championships at Bucknell on Saturday, defeating Grove City College 14-2 in the quarterfinals and Harvard 12-9 in the semifinals. Senior Maggie Hatcher (Evanston, Ill./Long Beach State) led the Red Foxes with five goals in the two games, as sophomores Kristen Barnett (Houston, Texas) and Rachel Sunday (Carlisle, Pa.) each added three goals on the day.
The Red Foxes opened the day with a 14-2 dismantling of Grove City. Sophomore Hilary Schroeder (Santa Barbara, Calif.) led Marist with three goals in the game with Sunday adding a pair. Eleven different players scored for Marist in the game. Sunday also led Marist with three assists, while Barnett led the way defensively with four steals. The goalie tandem of Elizabeth Davis (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Madison Weber (Walnut Creek) needed to make only four saves in the win.
Marist would be tested in their semifinal against the Crimson of Harvard. After playing to a 2-2 tie after the first quarter, the Red Foxes scored three times in the second quarter to go ahead 5-3. Marist outscored Harvard 7-6 in the second half to come away with the 12-9 win. Hatcher led the Red Foxes with four goals, as Barnett also tallied a pair. Sophomore Angie Rampton (Simi Valley, Calif.) had three assists in the game.
The Red Foxes (6-4) will take on Bucknell in the tournament final Sunday at Noon.
