POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Marist men's lacrosse team suffered a 9-8 loss to Saint Joseph's in four overtimes in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Lacrosse League game on Saturday at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. Sophomore Ryan Sharkey (West Field, N.J.) led the Red Foxes with three goals.
Andrew Mandela scored the game-winning goal at the 2:34 of the fourth overtime, lifting Saint Joseph's to 2-0 in the MAAC and 2-6 overall. Marist is now 0-2 in the MAAC and 0-6 on the season.
Sophomore Matt Teichmann (Huntington, N.Y.) scored two goals and had 10 shots for the Red Foxes, who also received a goal and an assist from freshman Corey Zindel (Randolph, N.J.).
Marist closed the first half with four consecutive goals to take a 6-2 halftime lead. The Red Foxes held an 8-4 fourth-quarter lead, but a furious Saint Joseph's rally resulted in four goals in less than a seven-minute span, which forced the contest to go to overtime.
Senior Terrence Dempsey (Lynbrook, N.Y.) got the start in goal for Marist and made 17 saves.
Marist held a 51-36 edge in shots, and also won 16 out of 24 face-offs. Junior Dan Needle (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) was 15-for-23 on draws and registered a team-high five ground balls.
The Red Foxes return to action on Tuesday at Stony Brook. Start time is slated for 7 p.m.
