WILTON, Conn.- The Marist women's lacrosse team lost to Brown by a score of 13-12 on Wednesday afternoon in Wilton, Conn. The Red Foxes held a 6-3 lead at the half, but could not hold on, as Brown scored the first four goals of the second half. The loss drops Marist to 2-4.
Marist (2-4) took a 3-0 lead on two goals from Jessica O'Brien (Wantagh, N.Y.) and one from Ali Carnabuci (Albertson, N.Y.). After a Brown goal by Krystina Deluca , Liz Falco (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) found the back of the net to make it 4-1 Marist.
Brown cut the lead to 4-3 before Lindsey Diener (Nanuet, N.Y.) and Falco made it 6-3 going into the break.
Brown took a 7-6 lead with four goals in just over six minutes to start the second half. The Red Foxes were able to come back and take a brief 9-8 lead after two straight goals from Kate Noftsker (Needham, Mass.).
Less then one minute after Noftsker's second goal, the Bears tied the score 9-9. Marist would again take a one goal lead with 10:49 remaining on Noftsker's third goal of the game.
Brown (3-5) tied the game at 10-10, before Diener gave the Red Foxes their last lead of the game with an unassisted goal with nine minutes left in the second half.
Following Diener's score, the Bears rallied off three straight to take a 13-11 lead, and Marist could not find an answer.
Liz Burkhard was in net for the Red Foxes. The senior made ten saves but took the loss (2-4).
Marist was out-shot 44-21, and lost the battle of ground balls 24-18. Brown also won 20-of-27 draw controls.
The Red Foxes were led by Diener's three goals and two assists. Noftsker had three goals, and O'Brien had two goals and an assist. Falco chipped in with two scores, and junior Stephanie Garland (Long Valley, N.J.) had a goal and an assist.
Marist was led on the defensive end by Carolyn Sumcizk (Syosset, N.Y.). The junior had three ground balls and caused two turnovers.
Brown was led by Deluca and Alexa Caldwell, who both had three goals.
The Red Foxes return to action on Saturday when they host Fairfield in their MAAC regular season opener. Game time is 1 p.m.
