Farfield Tops Marist In OT Thriller

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.- Lindsey Diener (Nanuet, N.Y.) had two goals and three assists, but it wasn't enough as Fairfield knocked off Marist, 11-10, in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener for both teams. Fairfield's Kristen Coleman scored 13 seconds into the second overtime period and the Stags were able to hold on for the win.

Marist (2-5, 0-1 MAAC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead 12 minutes into the game on goals from Diener, Noftsker, and Liz Falco (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), but Fairfield (7-1, 1-0 MAAC) roared back with four straight of their own to take a 4-3 lead with 14 minutes left in the first half.

The two teams would go into the break with the score tied 5-5.

Like the first half, the Red Foxes came out on fire in the second half, scoring two goals just two minutes and nineteen seconds in.

Once again, the Stags came back quickly to tie the score with two goals of their own. Erin Rigby, who scored four times on the day, scored the first goal, and Cristin Lucena scored the second. Both were assisted by Coleman.

Cristin Begley (Brookville, Md.) gave the Red Foxes an 8-7 lead with 18 minutes left on a free position shot, but seven minutes later, Fairfield's Abbey Goodwin tied the score. The score remained tied 8-8 through the rest of regulation.

In the first overtime period, Fairfield held a 10-9 lead until Noftsker found the back of the net after a Begley pass to tie the score with 14 seconds remaining.

Coleman scored the game-winner with 2:47 remaining in the second overtime, and the Red Foxes could never get anything going.

Liz Burkhard (Wantagh, N.Y.) had a strong game in goal for Marist. She made 16 saves in the loss.

Marist was out-shot 40-27, but they held a 22-21 edge in ground balls. Fairfield dominated the battle of draw controls, winning 19 of 25. The game had eight ties and five lead changes.

Coleman had two goals and three assists for Fairfield, and Goodwin had three goals and one assist.

Noftsker tallied two scores and an assist for Marist, and Begley had a goal and an assist.

Marist will look to halt their current four game skid on Monday when they face Lafayette. Game time is 4 p.m. at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field.
