Red Foxes Hold On For Huge Win Over Canisius

April 11, 2008

Box Score

BUFFALO, N.Y.- Lindsey Diener (Nanuet, N.Y.) scored on a free position shot with 1:17 left to give Marist a 15-14 lead, and the Marist women's lacrosse team was able to hang on for their biggest win of the season over Canisius. The win moves the Red Foxes to 3-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and 6-6 overall.

Marist held 10-3 lead at the half, but the Griffs were able to come back with a furious second half rally.

With 10:44 remaining, the Red Foxes held a 14-9 lead and looked to be in total control.

Canisius (6-7, 1-1 MAAC) then scored five unanswered to tie the score with just 2:58 left, but Diener was able to find the back of the net for the difference maker. It was her fifth goal of the game.

Coming into the game, Diener held the Marist career points and assists record, and needed three goals to tie the career goals mark. She did that and more in scoring five goals. The three-year captain now has 151 goals in her career. The record breaker was the goal that gave the Red Foxes the 14-9 lead with 10:44 left.

Marist started hot as they scored seven of the game's first eight goals. Canisius cut the lead to 7-2, but the Marist women finished the first half scoring three of four and took a seven goal lead into the break.

The Red Foxes took 15 shots in that first half and netted ten of them.

The second half was another story as Canisius out-shot Marist 16-8. The Griffs scored four of the first five to cut the Marist lead to 11-7, but the Red Foxes answered with two of their own. The first was Diener's record tying goal, and the second was Ali Carnabuci's (Albertson, N.Y.) third of the game. Lindsay Rinefierd (Smithtown, N.Y.) assisted Diener's goal and Cristin Begley (Brookville, Md.) assisted Carnabuci's.

Sophomore Liz Falco (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) had a solid game for the Red Foxes. She had two goals and two assists, and Carnabuci had an assist to go along with her three goals.

Kaitlyn O'Sullivan (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), Kellie Considine (Wantagh, N.Y.), Stephanie Garland (Long Valley, N.J.), Jessica O'Brien (Wantagh, N.Y.), and Rinefierd all had one goal apiece.

Nicole Musto (Glastonbury, Conn.) had four ground balls and three caused turnovers on the evening.

Liz Burkhard was in net for the win. She made 12 saves and had five ground balls.

Canisius held a 32-23 advantage in shots, but the Red Foxes held a slight, 23-22 edge in ground balls.

The Griffs were led by Chelsea Martinez (six goals) and Erica Nasca (four goals, one assist).

With the win, Marist moves into second place in the MAAC standings. The Red Foxes have another big game at Niagara on Sunday.

"It was a great game and win," said Marist Head Coach Tanya Kotowicz. "It's nice to come out on top, but we know that we have another big game on Sunday."
