QUEENS, N.Y.- The Marist softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with St. John's at Red Storm Field in Queens, N.Y. on Wednesday afternoon. Senior pitcher Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) led Marist's 4-1 win in the opener, but the Red Foxes (13-22, 0-3 MAAC) couldn't match their game one performance as they dropped the nightcap 10-0. Rigos tossed her 16th complete game of the season in the opener and struck out ten, and St. John's hurler Kat Lawrence pitched a perfect game in game two.
Marist scored three runs in the first and tacked on one more in the second. After retiring the first two Marist batters, St. John's starter Linzee Sumrall walked the next two, and senior Pamela de la Llave (West Orange, N.J.) followed with an RBI single for the game's first run. Fellow senior Annie Castellano (Hauppauge, N.Y.) followed with a two-run single to give the Red Foxes a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the first, Rigos allowed a two out double but struck out the next batter and allowed the Marist bats to get back to work.
Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) laced a one out double to right field, advanced to third on a wild pitch and was able to score when Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) reached on an error by the St. John's shortstop.
Rigos (10-10) allowed an unearned run in the third on no hits, and the senior cruised the rest of the way. She allowed two hits in seven innings of work.
Marist had six hits in the opener. Alanna Woody (Clinton Corners, N.Y.), Alison Catenacci (Mefield, Mass.), Green, de la Llave, Castellano, and Giordano had the Red Fox hits.
Lawrence was simply perfect in game two for St. John's. She struck out 12. Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) took the loss on the mound for Marist, and Alyson Funn had four RBI's in game two for the Red Storm (16-29).
Marist will return to the diamond with two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference road doubleheaders this weekend. They will visit Rider on Saturday and Iona on Sunday.
