Marist's Comeback Falls Short Against Lafayette

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Down 10-3 late in the third quarter against Lafayette on Wednesday, the Marist men's lacrosse team battled back to get within three goals with 10:36 to go only to fall 11-7 at Tenney Stadium. Sophomore attack Ryan Sharkey (West Field, N.J.) led the Red Foxes with three goals. Freshman Corey Zindel (Randolph, N.J.) had four points in the game, with a goal and three assists.

Marist (0-9) outshot Lafayette 43-28 in the game, with 27 shots on goal. The Red Foxes also held a 30-23 ground ball edge, with faceoff midfielder Dan Needle (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) winning 17 of the 22 faceoffs in the game for Marist. Lafayette goalie Jeff Canfield made 20 saves in the game, as Ryan Penner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) had seven saves for Marist.

Lou Aboyoun (Wayne, N.J.) opened the scoring in Wednesday's game with his second goal of the season 1:48 into the game, giving Marist the early lead. Lafayette tied the game at the 4:04 mark of the first quarter as John Galassi set up Steve Serling for the Leopards' first goal. The Leopards went on to score the next six goals, taking a 7-1 lead with 3:52 to go in the first half. Sharkey got the Red Foxes back on the board with a goal assisted by Ryan McNierney (Commack, N.Y.) with 2:23 to go in the second quarter. He would score again at the 1:51 mark to cut the deficit to four going in to halftime.

It was Lafayette with the momentum to start the second half, as the Leopards got goals from Matt Mersky, Franklin Floyd, and Steve Serling to go ahead 10-3 with 2:24 to go in the third quarter. Marist would come back with a goal from Kyle Reny (Marblehead, Mass.) to get within six at the end of the third. The Red Foxes started the fourth quarter with a Sharkey goal 2:10 into the final period, making the score 10-5. Matt Teichmann (Huntington, N.Y.) responded with a man-up goal 44 seconds later to get Marist within four. Zindel scored with 10:36 to go in the game to get the Red Foxes within three, 10-7. From that point, Lafayette would add one more goal as Canfield made six saves in the last ten minutes go give the Leopards the win.

Lafayette (3-6) was led in scoring by Matt Mersky and Steve Serling, who each had three goals and an assist. Tom Perini added two goals and an assist, as John Galassi added a goal and an assist.

Marist will go on the road Saturday as they take on Canisius in MAAC play. Gametime in Buffalo is scheduled for 11 a.m.
