POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's water polo team took care of business on Sunday at the McCann Center, defending their home pool with wins over Villanova and St. Francis (N.Y.). The Red Foxes defeated Villanova 12-6 behind four goals from sophomore driver Kristen Barnett (Houston, Texas). Later in the afternoon, Marist defeated St. Francis (N.Y.) 15-4, with Samantha Swartz (Harleysville, Pa.) and Rosie Pauli (Sacramento, Calif.) each scoring three goals.
Marist got out to a strong start against Villanova, taking a 5-1 lead after the first quarter. The Red Foxes then showed their mettle on the defensive end in the second quarter, shutting out the Wildcats and growing the lead to eight goals, 9-1. Junior 2M Katelin McCahill (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) and sophomore driver Angie Rampton (Simi Valley, Calif.) each had a pair of goals in the Red Foxes' fourth straight win. Swartz led Marist with three assists in the game. Senior goalie Elizabeth Davis (Albuquerque, N.M.) made 11 saves in the win, adding three steals and an assist.
The Red Foxes took on the Terriers of St. Francis (N.Y.) in their second game of the day. Once again, Marist's defense was stifling in giving up only two goals in the first three quarters as the Red Foxes took a 12-2 lead. Eight different Marist players scored in the game, as Rampton and freshman 2M Rachel Sunday (Carlisle, Pa.) led Marist with 2 assists apiece. Swartz, Konopka, and Emily St. Omer Roy (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) each had three steals. Davis made seven saves in the win and dished out two assists.
Marist (19-6, 4-0) will go on the road on Wednesday to take on #14 Hartwick. Gametime is at 8 p.m.
