Marist Falls To Vermont 12-10

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Junior midfield Paul Santavicca (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) scored with 5:03 left in Wednesday's game with Vermont to get within two, 12-10. However, the Vermont defense kept the Red Foxes off the scoreboard for the rest of the game to take the win at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. Sophomore attack Matt Teichmann (Huntington, N.Y.) led all scorers with three goals.

Teichmann opened the game with a man-up goal assisted by Ryan Sharkey (West Field, N.J.) with 6:19 to go in the first quarter. Vermont responded with a goal at the 3:12 mark from Derek Lichtfuss. The Catamounts added four more goals to take a 5-1 lead with 10:51 to go in the second quarter. Matt Francis (Lansdale, Pa.) led Marist back with a man-up goal with 9:55 left in the first half to make the score 5-2. Freshman Ryan McNierney (Commack, N.Y.) scored 16 seconds later to get the Red Foxes within two. After Liam Thomas scored for Vermont to take a 6-3 lead, McNierney scored his second goal with Corey Zindel (Randolph, N.J.) answering his at that 1:20 mark to get Marist within one, 6-5. Andrew Holden put Vermont ahead two with a goal with seven seconds left in the half.

Marist (0-11) started the second half with a goal from Lou Aboyoun (Wayne, N.J.) to get within one, 7-6. As they did in the first half, the Catamounts went on a run scoring three goals to take a 10-6 lead. Teichmann led Marist back with two straight man-up goals to make the score 10-8 with 13:25 to go in the game. Marist and Vermont traded goals the rest of the way, with Santavicca's tally at the 5:03 mark of the quarter representing the last goal of the game. Marist had three shots in the last five minutes of the game and could get no closer.

The Red Foxes outshot Vermont 34-28 and held a 35-24 ground ball advantage. Marist also won 18 of the 25 face-offs in the game and converted five of six extra-man opportunities. Vermont was 2-for-7 in extra-man opportunities, with goalie Justin Lubas making 13 saves. Liam Thomas and Andrew Holden each scored two goals for Vermont, as 10 different players scored for the Catamounts. With the win, Vermont is now 4-8 on the season.

Marist continues their current homestand on Saturday against Holy Cross. Gametime at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
