POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist baseball team had its six-game winning streak snapped on yesterday, as the Red Foxes suffered a 6-2 home loss to Stony Brook. Freshman designated hitter Ben Henderson (Albany, N.Y.) had two hits for the Red Foxes, who fell to 11-13 overall.
Sophomore right-hander Eric Alessio (Nyack, N.Y.) made his first start of the season for the Red Foxes, and took the loss. Alessio pitched six-plus innings, giving up eight hits and no walks while striking out five. He was charged with five runs, four of which were earned.
Stony Brook scored one run in the top of the first, and added three in the second. The Red Foxes got on the scoreboard first in the third inning on an RBI groundout by freshman second baseman Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.), which scored senior catcher Keith Glasser (Rensselaer, N.Y.). Marist scored again in the fifth, as a Pacione single was followed up by an RBI double by sophomore left fielder Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.), which cut the Seawolves' lead to 4-2.
Stony Brook scored twice in the seventh to advance to the lead to 6-2. In the eighth inning, the Red Foxes were able to load the bases with no outs, but Stony Brook reliever Jordan Purington retired three straight Marist hitters and did not allow a run to score.
Michael Barbot pitched 1.2 innings of relief for Stony Brook to get the win. The Seawolves improved to 15-11 on the season.
Junior right-hander Jacob Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.) did not allow a run in his two innings of relief while striking out three, and freshman right-hander Brendan Chapin (South Weymouth, Mass.) pitched a scoreless ninth.
Marist will return to action on Saturday, as the Red Foxes will host Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference-leading Canisius in a doubleheader. The first game will start at noon.
