PRINCETON, N.J. - The Marist water polo team split games for the second straight day at the Princeton Invitational on Sunday afternoon. The Red Foxes opened the day with a 13-10 loss to Bucknell before beating Maryland 7-6. Senior Katelin McCahill (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) scored six goals on the day, five coming against Bucknell. Marist is now 4-5 on the season.
The Red Foxes fell behind 3-1 after the first quarter against Bucknell. The Bison then poured it on in the second quarter, scoring five goals to take an 8-4 halftime lead. Trailing 11-6 after three quarters, Marist got four goals in the fourth but that would not be enough to defeat Bucknell. Kristen Barnett (Houston, Texas) added a pair of goals in the loss. Samantha Swartz (Harleysville, Pa.) led the Marist defense with four steals apiece. Jessica Getchius (Simi Valley, Calif.) had eight saves in the game.
After tying Maryland 1-1 in the first quarter, Marist outscored the Terrapins 2-1 in the second quarter to take a 3-2 lead at halftime. The one-goal lead would stick for the rest of the game as each team scored four goals in the second half to give the Red Foxes a 7-6 win. Barnett and Caitlin Hopkins (Beaverton, Ore.) each had two goals in the win. Pauli, McCahill, and Swartz also scored for Marist. Getchius had 12 saves.
Marist will host the 2009 ECAC Championships February 28-March 1. The Red Foxes are the top seed and will take on Mercyhurst on Saturday, February 28 at 9 a.m. in the McCann Natatorium.
