NEW ORLEANS, La. - Red-shirt sophomore catcher Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.) and sophomore third baseman Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) each belted three-run homers and combined for nine runs batted in as the Marist baseball team earned a 12-7 victory at New Orleans on Friday. The win improved the Red Foxes' record to 3-1.
Nugent's opposite field three-run homer in the second inning put the Red Foxes on the scoreboard and gave them a 3-0 lead. After New Orleans answered with three runs in the bottom of the second, Nugent drove in two more runs in the third with a single, staking the Red Foxes to a 5-3 lead.
With Marist holding a 6-5 lead in the seventh, the Red Foxes expanded their lead on an RBI single by Pacione and a sacrifice fly by senior left fielder Brian McDonough (Hanover, Mass.). Pacione's three- run homer in the eighth closed out the scoring.
Junior right-hander Eric Alessio (Nyack, N.Y.) pitched 3.1 innings of relief to earn the victory. Alessio improved his record to 1-1.
Marist and New Orleans will resume their season with a single game on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST on Saturday.
