NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Marist baseball team suffered a 4-2 loss at New Orleans on Saturday in the second of a three-game series. Sophomore center fielder Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.) had three hits for the Red Foxes, while sophomore third baseman Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) and freshman shortstop Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.) had two apiece.
Trailing 1-0 entering the top of the fourth, Marist junior left fielder Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.) led off the inning with a double. Gauck later scored on a sacrifice fly by senior right fielder Brian McDonough (Hanover, Mass.). However, New Orleans answered with three runs in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead.
In the top of the ninth, a two-out RBI double by Schwind brought the Red Foxes within two runs. However, with Gallic on third and Schwind representing the tying run at second, Marist was unable to push any more runs across.
Junior right-hander Richard Cary (Binghamton, N.Y.) started and took the loss for Marist, falling to 1-1 on the season. Cary was relieved by freshman right-hander Sean McKeown (Hillsborough, N.J.) followed with a scoreless eighth which included two strikeouts.
Marist and New Orleans will meet in the rubber game of the series on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. EST. Junior right-hander B.J. Martin (Manalapan, N.J.), who struck out eight in his first start of the season on Feb. 22 at Charleston Southern, is Marist's scheduled starter.
