Box Score
NEW ORLEANS, La. - Buoyed by scoring six runs in the second inning, the Marist baseball team earned a 9-4 victory at New Orleans in the rubber game of a three-game series on Sunday. The Red Foxes pounded out 12 hits as they improved to 4-2 on the season.
Junior right-hander B.J. Martin (Manalapan, N.J.) pitched the first six innings to earn the victory. Martin allowed just two earned runs, five hits and three walks while striking out seven. Sophomore right-hander Kyle Putnam pitched the final three innings to earn his first collegiate save.
The Red Foxes opened the scoring with their six-run second inning, which involved four Marist hits and two New Orleans errors. Sophomore center fielder Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.) belted a two-run double in the inning, and freshman shortstop Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.) followed with an RBI double.
New Orleans chipped away at the Marist lead by scoring twice in the third and once in the fifth. However, Marist put the game away by putting up a three-run seventh. After a double by senior right fielder Kyle Meyer (East Greenbush, N.Y.) and a single by Gallic, Schwind's RBI single gave Marist a 7-3 lead. After a single by junior second baseman John Prano (Oviedo, Fla.), Marist closed out the scoring with a two-run single by sophomore third baseman Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.).
Meyer and Gallic each had three-hit games, while Pacione and Schwind had two apiece.
Marist will return to action next weekend with a three-game series at Norfolk State. The teams will play a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday, followed by a single game on Sunday.
