POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The score was knotted at 11 with 3:44 to play, when Marist senior Cristin Begley (Brookville, Md.) converted on a free position shot to propel the Marist women's lacrosse team to a 12-11 victory over the University of Connecticut on Tuesday afternoon at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. The win was the teams second one goal victory of the season, and third consecutive one goal decision.
In the first 10 minutes of the contest, the Red Foxes and Huskies traded goals to get the score to 2-2. Junior Lauren Ciccarello (Wantagh, N.Y.) scored on a free position shot to tie the score at two, and start a 3-0 Marist run, which was capped by Cicarello's second goal of the game. She finished with four points, as she had two assists in the match as well. Ciccarello was tied for the team-high in points with four and led the team in draw controls with three.
Marist (3-1) earned their largest lead of the game on a Kate Noftsker (Needham, Mass.) goal with 28:21 to play in the second half; their lead became 9-5, a four goal margin. After the Noftsker marker, UConn went on a 5-0 run to recapture the lead, 10-9, their first since 20:39 mark, when the visitors held a 2-1 advantage.
Stephanie Garland (Long Valley, N.J.) tied the score at 10, off a Begley pass with 13:03 remaining in regulation. Thirty-four seconds later, Marist second lead of the afternoon on a Begley goal with 12:29 to play. The Red Foxes held the lead for 2:27 before Connecticut's Katy Ryan notched a free position goal for the games' fifth tie, at 11-11, before Begley would answer with the game-winning free position goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Thoms (Newark, N.Y.) made 10 saves to earn the victory and improve to 3-1 on the season. Since she came in at halftime of the season opener at Lafayette, she has started the other three contests for the Red Foxes.
Marist will embark on their longest road trip of the season, a four-game stint which will begin on Wednesday, March 18 at Davidson. The opening draw is scheduled for 7 p.m.
