NEWARK, Del. - The Marist baseball team suffered a 16-5 defeat at Delaware in the second game of a three-game series on Saturday. Sophomore third baseman Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) and junior second baseman John Prano (Oviedo, Fla.) had two hits apiece for the Red Foxes, who fell to 6-5 on the season.
Delaware got off a strong start, scoring five runs in the first, two in the second and four in the third before the Red Foxes could get on the scoreboard. The Red Foxes scored three times in the fourth on four hits, and added another run in the fifth. However, Delaware expanded its lead by scoring twice in the sixth and seventh, and once in the eighth. Delaware first baseman Ryan Cuneo went 3-for-5 with five RBIs and belted a home run.
Pacione added a pair of runs scored for the Red Foxes, who were outhit 22-10.
Junior right-hander B.J. Martin (Manalapan, N.J.) took the loss, allowing seven runs in one-plus inning of work.
Marist and Delaware will conclude their three-game series on Sunday, with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. Sophomore right-hander Kyle Putnam (New Windsor, N.Y.) is the Red Foxes' scheduled starter.
