POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - After trailing 5-3 to Fairfield at halftime, the Marist men's lacrosse team got back-to-back goals from Matt Teichmann (Huntington, N.Y.) and Corey Zindel (Randolph, N.J.) to tie the game at 5-5 with 7:33 to go in the third quarter. Fairfield responded with three straight goals to take an 8-5 lead, before eventually winning 8-6 at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Fairfield (3-2) got on the board 1:59 into the game as John Snellman put a Chris Creighton pass right into the back of the net. Snellman found the net again at the 11:16 mark of the first quarter to give the Stags a 2-1 lead. Marist got on the scoreboard with 6:32 to go in the first as Evan Guarini (Long Valley, N.J.) rippled the net off of a Keegan Blaney (Stony Brook, N.Y.) feed. The Stags put the lead back up to two on a Logan Rausse goal with 1:21 to go in the quarter.
Marist (1-3) got back within a goal with 12:58 to go in the second quarter as Guarini scored his second goal of the game. The Stags got the lead up to three as Snellman and Nick Baglio found the back of the net, making the score 5-2 with 1:26 to go in the quarter. Marist closed to within two at halftime as Kyle Reny (Marblehead, Mass.) scored from 10 yards out with 38 seconds left in the half. Fairfield outshot Marist 16-13 in the first half and held a 21-12 advantage in ground balls.
The Red Foxes got on the board quickly in the third quarter, with Paul Santavicca (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) assisting on Teichmann's goal with 13:26 to go in the third to make the score 5-4. Marist then tied the game at the 7:33 mark with a man-up goal by Zindel. The Stags took back the lead with 6:29 to go in the third on Snellman's fourth goal of the game. Fairfield grew the lead to two, 7-5, as Chris Trombino scored off the opening faceoff of the fourth quarter. Sean Bannon then scored off of a clear at the 8:50 mark of the fourth to put the Stags ahead 8-5. Marist outshot Fairfield 7-4 in the fourth but could only get one goal as Ryan Sharkey (West Field, N.J.) scored man-up with 2:44 left in the game to make the score 8-6.
Marist outshot Fairfield 28-27 in the game, but the Stags held a 35-26 ground-ball advantage. Both Ryan Penner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) of Marist and Charlie Cipriano of Fairfield had 10 saves. Santavicca and Matt Francis (Lansdale, Pa.) combined to win 10 faceoffs.
The Red Foxes will start a three-game road trip on Saturday, March 21 at Mount St. Mary's. Gametime is set for 1 p.m.
