LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The Marist women's lacrosse team led 10-3 at halftime, and held on to collect a 15-11 win in its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opener against Siena at Siena Turf Field on Wednesday evening. With the win, the Red Foxes set a program record in consecutive wins, with four, and improved to 6-1 on the season and 1-0 in the conference.
Senior Stephanie Garland (Long Valley, N.J.) scored a game-high six goals for the second time this season to the lead the Marist offense. She also added an assist for a total of seven points on the day. Senior Kate Noftsker (Needham, Mass.) and Lauren Ciccarello (Wantagh, N.Y.) each added three points to the attack, behind a goal and two assists each. Noftsker had five ground balls. Prior to Wednesday's match, she had eight all season.
After giving up the first goal of the game, the Red Foxes settled and responded with a 6-0 run. Noftsker assisted on the first two Marist goals of the half. The goal scorers were freshman Jori Procaccini (Long Valley, N.J.) and Garland. Noftsker now has a point in 11 straight games.
Ciccarello played a role in the final three goals in the run. She had two assists and a goal in the stretch. The second goal she assisted came off the stick of senior Carolyn Sumcizk (Syosset, N.Y.) with 12:46 to play in the opening frame.
After a Lindsey Rosecrans goal made the score 6-2, the Red Foxes scored four of the final goals of the first half, including two Garland goals in the final 22 seconds of the half.
Freshman Ariel Kramer (Syracuse, N.Y.) lengthened the Marist lead to 11-3 on a free position goal with 24:48 remaining in the second half.
The Saints would not go quietly as they scored four goals over in an 11:03 span to come as close as three. The score was 11-8 with 11:12 remaining.
Marist and Siena would trade the next three goals. Garland scored her sixth of the game with 8:03 to play. Rosecrans would answer 49 seconds later to make to cut the Marist lead back to three. Senior Cristin Begley (Brookville, Md.) lengthened the lead back to four, as she notched her first of the game with 5:06 remaining.
Siena cut the Marist lead to two, 13-11, with 2:41 to play on a Deidre McQuillan free position goal and Rosencrans' fourth marker of the game. The Red Foxes added two goals over the final 10 seconds to arrive at the 15-11 final score.
Freshman Kelsey Thoms (Newark, N.Y.), the regining MAAC Rookie of the Week, made 10 saves to earn her sixth victory of the season. She also had two ground balls in the game.
Junior Morgan Dillon (Freeport, N.Y.) scooped up seven ground balls to lead all players along with four draw controls and two caused turnovers. The Red Foxes picked up 37 ground balls, to Siena's 25.
The Red Foxes will return to action on Friday, March 27 against the Manhattan Jaspers (5-2). The opening draw is slated for 7 p.m.
