RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Marist women's lacrosse team capped a four-game road trip with a tough loss to the Manhattan Jaspers (5-2, 1-0 MAAC), 14-12 in Riverdale on Friday night. With the loss, the Red Foxes dropped to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). During their four games away from Tenney Stadium the Red Foxes notched a 3-1 record.
The Red Foxes' offense was powered by the trio of seniors Stephanie Garland (Long Valley, N.J.), who had five points, and Kate Noftsker (Needham, Mass.) and junior Lauren Ciccarello (Wantagh, N.Y.) who had three goals each. Garland also scooped four ground balls on the day.
Manhattan's Chrissy Gutenberger opened the scoring just 54 seconds into the game when she capitalized on a Madeline Schuck (Cockeysville, Md.) turnover. Marist would respond with two goals scored by Noftsker and Ciccarello to take a 2-1 lead with 27:46 remaining in the opening frame.
Throughout the first half, the Jaspers extended their lead to two on three occasions; however, the Red Foxes would battle back to tie on two instances. A Carolyn Sumcizk (Syosset, N.Y.) goal knotted the score at six and Garland made the score seven a piece with 7:20 remaining.
Ciccarello and Noftsker scored two of the first three goals of the second half to even the score at eight and nine, one of six ties in the match.
Manhattan would explode for the next five goals to boast a 13-9 lead, their largest of the match, before Garland would notch her fourth marker of the contest with 12:11 to play to pull the Red Foxes to within three.
Marist was able to cut the lead to two twice in the final six minutes of play, as Ciccarello scored her third goal of the night to make the score 13-11. Cristin Begley (Brookville, Md.) found the back of the net with 1:23 to play, to make the margin 14-12, the final score.
Begley had four caused turnovers and five ground balls, both team highs on the night.
The Red Foxes will return to action on Sunday, March 29 in a MAAC contest with the Iona Gaels at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. The opening draw is scheduled for 2 p.m.
