EASTON, PA. - The Marist men's lacrosse team ended its three-game road swing on Tuesday afternoon with an 11-7 loss at Lafayette. Attackmen Evan Guarini (Long Valley, N.J.) had his second straight hat trick in the loss, which moved Marist to 3-4 on the season. The loss snapped the Red Foxes' two-game winning streak.
Guarini gave the Red Foxes an early 1-0 lead with a goal 29 seconds into the game. Lafayette (4-5) took control of the quarter after Marist's early tally. The Leopards tied the game at 1-1 with a Greg Allis goal at the 9:37 mark. Tom Perini put Lafayette ahead 2-1 with his first goal one minute later. Lafayette won all six face-offs in the quarter and took a 3-1 lead on Brett Dhaja's goal with 8:05 to go. The Leopards outshot Marist 11-7 in the first quarter and held a 9-4 ground ball advantage. The Red Foxes got back within a goal, 3-2, with 56 seconds remaining in the first on a Bob von Hoffman (Montclair, N.J.) goal.
Lafayette grew the lead back to three, 5-2, early in the second quarter as Joe Howard and Colin Serling each found the back of the net. Junior Matt Teichmann (Huntington, N.Y.) scored with 9:07 remaining in the half to get the Red Foxes within two, 5-3. That was Marist's lone goal of the second quarter. Lafayette outshot Marist 10-8 in the second quarter, and only two of Marist's shots went on goal. The Leopards put the lead up to four before halftime with goals from Perini and Matt Mersky.
Sophomore Ryan Sharkey (West Field, N.J.) scored his only goal of the game with 11:24 remaining in the third quarter, getting an assist from Zachary Walsh (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) to make the score 8-5. Both defenses put the clamps on after that goal as neither team scored for the remainder of the quarter. Each team had 12 shots in the third, with Marist goalie Ryan Penner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) making seven saves to Lafayette's Jeff Canfield's two.
Marist got back to within two goals early in the fourth quarter as von Hoffman tallied his second goal 49 seconds into the period. Lafayette then got a key man-up goal at the 12:16 mark, as Stefan Bauer assisted on Perini's fourth goal of the game. Guarini completed his hat trick at the 9:31 mark with von Hoffman assisting on his third goal, making the score 9-7. Marist outshot the Leopards 9-5 in the final quarter but could not muster another goal. The Red Foxes struggled clearing the ball in the fourth, only converting 4-of-7. Lafayette added two more goals late in the game for the 11-7 win.
Lafayette outshot Marist 38-36 in the game and held a 29-23 advantage in ground balls. The Leopards also won 14 of the 22 face-offs in the game. Penner had 16 saves for Marist as Canfield had nine for Lafayette. Senior midfield Paul Santavicca (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) led the Red Foxes with eight shots, four of which went on net. Penner and Keegan Blaney (Stony Brook, N.Y.) had three apiece. Perini led Lafayette with five goals.
Marist returns to Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field on Saturday, April 4 for a 1 p.m. game against MAAC Lacrosse League opponent VMI. The Red Foxes are one of three MAAC teams that are currently undefeated in conference play.
