HARTFORD, CONN. - The Marist women's tennis team won its final tune up prior to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament on Wednesday as the Red Foxes bested the Hartford Hawks, 5-2. With the win Marist closed out the regular season with a 5-10 record.
Marist swept the doubles point to take an early 1-0 advantage from the Hawks. At first doubles Emily Zampello (Kingwood, Texas) and Retta Byron (Scottsdale, Ariz.) won 8-4 at second and Joanna Macaluso (Stormville, N.Y.) and Jeannie Lukin (Kinderhook, N.Y.) took an 8-3 decision at third doubles.
The Red Foxes then secured the victory with four singles wins. Colon won her second match of the day in the final dual match of her career. She defeated Margaret Sabatino in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3 at third singles.
Macaluso won her first career singles match in six attempts from the sixth spot in the lineup with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Gulay Ozdemir.
At first singles, McCarthy took a straight set victory from Michels, for her second win over Michels on the day. McCarthy won the singles portion of the match, 6-3, 6-2.
Marist will return to action on Friday, April 17 at 9 a.m. as they open the MAAC Championships in the quarterfinal round. As the fourth seed, the Red Foxes will take on the Siena Saints at the USTA National Tennis Center in Queens, N.Y. When the teams met during the regular season, Marist took a 5-2 victory from the Saints at the East Campus Tennis Pavilion.
