PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Marist men's lacrosse team got behind Providence 8-3 after three quarters at the Providence lacrosse complex on Wednesday and got to within two goals with 10 minutes remaining. The Red Foxes', however, could not come all the way back and lost 9-7 for their first MAAC Lacrosse League loss this season. Corey Zindel (Randolph, N.J.) and Bob von Hoffman (Montclair, N.J.) each had two goals for Marist.
Providence (6-6, 5-1 MAAC) scored 1:24 into the game as Danny Ryan assisted on Jackson Fallon's first goal. The Friars scored 59 seconds later as Evan Helda put a Bobby Labadini pass into the back of the net, making the score 2-0. After Pete Wujciak gave Providence a 3-0 lead, Marist came back with an offensive fleury. Von Hoffman scored both of his goals in the first quarter. His first came at the 7:14 mark of the quarter, and his second was assisted by Zindel at the 6:45 mark. Sophomore midfielder Mike McLachlan (Norwalk, Conn.) tied the game at 3-3 with 5:56 remaining in the first.
The Friars controlled the second quarter, outshooting Marist 12-5 and going 5-for-6 in clears. Colin Tigh put Providence ahead 4-3 33 seconds into the quarter, putting a Mike Feldberg pass into the net. Jake Nolan then put the Friars ahead by two, 5-3, with a goal at the 7:49 mark of the second quarter. Ryan then scored with 6:43 remaining in the half to give Providence a 6-3 lead, which the Friars held until halftime. Marist outshot Providence 7-6 in the third quarter, but Tim Finnegan made four saves and kept the Red Foxes off the scoreboard for the second straight quarter. The Friars got goals from Feldberg and Labadini to take a commanding 8-3 lead into the fourth quarter.
Marist (4-6, 4-1 MAAC) started the comemack at the 12:17 mark of the fourth quarter as Matt Teichmann (Huntington, N.Y.) assisted on Zindel's first goal of the game. Zindel scored 44 seconds later to make the score 8-5. The Red Foxes got within two, 8-6, with 10:01 remaining in the game as Paul Santavicca (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) scored his only goal of the game. Marist outshot the Friars 13-4 in the fourth quarter but would not get any closer. Fallon scored with 46 seconds remaining to give the Friars a 9-6 lead. Evan Guarini (Long Valley, N.J.) scored with one second remaining to make the final score 9-7.
Providence outshot Marist 30-29 and held a 35-28 advantage in ground balls. Ryan Penner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) had eight saves for Marist and Tim Finnegan made 10 saves for Providence.
Marist will play its last road game of the 2009 regular season on Saturday, April 18 with a 1 p.m. game at Saint Joseph's.
