PHILADELPHIA, PA. - The Marist men's lacrosse team held a 7-6 lead going into the fourth quarter against Saint Joseph's at Finnessey Field on Saturday, but could not hold on for the win. The Hawks scored three times in the fourth quarter to come away with the 9-7 win. Ryan Sharkey (West Field, N.J.) and Evan Guarini (Long Valley, N.J.) each had two goals for the Red Foxes.
Saint Joseph's (5-8, 3-4 MAAC) controlled much of the first quarter. The Hawks got on the board first with 10:38 remaining in the first quarter with Scott Cullinan's first goal of the game. Charlie Gorman put Saint Joseph's ahead 2-0 with 6:35 remaining, putting a pass from Sean Evans into the back of the net. Marist got on the board 17 seconds later when Zachary Walsh (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) tied the game at 2-2 with a man-up goal at the 5:35 mark. The Hawks took the lead back with 1:51 remaining in the first quarter as Cullinan scored his second goal of the game.
Marist (4-7, 4-2 MAAC) tied the game 3-3 early in the second quarter as Paul Santavicca (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) assisted on a Sharkey man-up goal 38 seconds into the period. Saint Joseph's then scored three straight goals to go ahead 6-3. Joey D'Avanzo scored the Hawks' first goal of the run at the 11:55 mark to make the score 4-3. Evans and Tom Dunn also scored to give Saint Joseph's a three-goal lead with 4:43 left in the half. The Red Foxes went on a late run to get within a goal before halftime. Santavicca scored with 21 seconds left to make the score 6-4. Zindel followed with a goal with five seconds left in the half to make the score 6-5.
Each team had six shots in the third quarter, but it was Marist who was able to find the back of the net. Guarini scored both of the Red Foxes' goals in the second half to give them a 7-6 lead. Bob von Hoffman (Montclair, N.J.) assisted on Guarini's first goal with 8:58 remaining in the third to tie the game at 6-6. Guarini's second goal was scored with 1:46 left in the third to give Marist a 7-6 lead. However, the lead for Marist was short-lived. The Hawks got a man-up goal from Chris O'Neill 14 seconds into the fourth quarter to tie the game at 7-7. Evans then scored his second goal of the game with 8:37 remaining in the game to put Saint Joseph's ahead 8-7. The Hawks outshot Marist 12-6 in the final quarter and added one more goal for the win.
Saint Joseph's outshot Marist 34-28 for the game and forced 23 Red Fox turnovers. Marist held a 22-20 advantage in ground balls, with Ryan Penner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) had seven saves in goal, while the Hawks' Erik Hotaling made 13 saves.
Marist returns to Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field on Wednesday, April 22 when the Red Foxes host rival Siena. The game is set for 7 p.m.
