Marist Closes Regular Season With Split At Home Against Siena And Iona

April 19, 2009

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist water polo team closed the regular season with a split at home against Siena and Iona on Sunday at the McCann Natatorium. The Red Foxes beat Siena 9-2 in their first game of the day before taking a 9-5 loss to Iona. Marist finishes MAAC Water Polo League play with a 7-3 record, finishing third. Senior Katelin McCahill (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) led Marist with five goals against Siena, while Colleen Lischwe (Kirkwood, Mo.) had a hat trick against Siena.

Marist's (16-13, 7-3 MAAC) defense was stalwart against Siena in its first game of the day. The Red Foxes kept the Saints off the scoreboard in each of the first three quarters, building a 6-0 lead. Siena got on the board in the fourth quarter, but it was too late as Marist scored three times in the final quarter for the 9-2 win. Jessica Getchius (Simi Valley, Calif.) had nine saves in goal for Marist as Hilary Schroeder (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Angie Rampton (Simi Valley, Calif.) each had two steals.

Iona dominated the first half of its game against Marist, going ahead 5-1 at the break. The Red Foxes took 28 shots in the game, but could only muster five goals as Iona won 9-5. Samantha Swartz (Harleysville, Pa.) had two goals to go with Lischwe's three. Getchius had seven saves in goal. Swartz, Kristen Barnett (Houston, Texas), and Emily St. Omer Roy (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) each had an assist.

The Red Foxes will be the number three seed in the 2009 MAAC Water Polo Championships, to be played at the McCann Natatorium April 25 and 26. Marist will take on second-seeded Wagner on April 25.
