Ciccarello's Late Goal Lifts Marist Over Canisius On Senior Day

April 19, 2009

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Junior midfielder Lauren Ciccarello (Wantagh, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal with eight seconds remaining, giving the Marist women's lacrosse team a 10-9 victory over Canisius on Sunday at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field on Senior Day. The win gives the Red Foxes a 10-4 overall record and a 4-2 record in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play as they wrapped up the third seed in next weekend's conference tournament. Marist will face Canisius, the second seed, again on Friday in the MAAC Tournament semifinals.

The Red Foxes trailed by as much as four in the first half, and were down 6-3 at halftime. Marist faced an 8-5 deficit before holding the Golden Griffins to just one goal over the final 18:22. Senior midfielder Cristin Begley (Brookville, Md.) scored two goals in a span of 1:22 to bring the Red Foxes to within one, and a man-down goal by junior midfielder Erin Wilson (Ada, Mich.) tied the game at eight apiece with 8:56 remaining. At the 7:22 mark, senior midfielder Stephanie Garland (Long Valley, N.J.) scored her team-leading 48th goal of the season on a free-position shot to give the Red Foxes their first lead of the game at 9-8. However, Canisius' Theresa Walton scored on a free-position shot just 1:05 later to tie the score again, this time at nine apiece. The score remained tied until Ciccarello's game-winner.

Begley led the Red Foxes with three goals and one assist. Ciccarello, Garland and freshman defender Kelly Condon (Roslyn, Pa.) added two goals apiece.

Marist held a 28-26 lead in shots, with Ciccarello leading the way with nine. Ciccarello and senior midfielder Carolyn Sumcizk (Syosset, N.Y.) led the team with three ground balls apiece. Freshman goalie Kelsey Thoms (Newark, N.Y.) made nine saves.

Prior to the game, the eight members of Marist's senior class were honored: captains Begley, Garland and Sumcizk along with defender Caitlin Schuh (Columbia, Md.), attack Erin Clough (Golden, Colo.), attack Kate Noftsker (Needham, Mass.), attack Megan White (Copiague, N.Y.) and defender Ashley Dattellas (Camillus, N.Y.).

The Red Foxes will conclude their regular season on Tuesday, when they play at Binghamton at 4 p.m. A win would give Marist a program record for victories in a season.
