NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Marist women's lacrosse team fell in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship final match, to Fairfield Stags at Mazella Field on the campus of Iona College, 19-9. Senior Stephanie Garland (Long Valley, N.J.) led the way for the Red Foxes as she scored four goals in the game and tallied an assist as well. Marist participated in its third consecutive MAAC Championship final match on the afternoon.
Garland set a new single-season record in goals scored with 55. The previous record was held by Lindsay Diener. The record-breaking goal came with 4:35 to play in the game and made the score 18-8.
Fairfield opened the game on a 7-0 run as Kristen Coleman scored the first three goals of the game.
Marist responded by scoring three of the next four goals to cut the lead to five at, 8-3, with 10:14 to play in the frame. During the stretch, all three captains scored goals, Garland, Cristin Begley (Brookville, Md.) and Carolyn Sumcizk (Syosset, N.Y.).
In the second half, Fairfield five of the first six goals to builed a 10 goal lead at 16-6 with 20:46 to play in the game. During the stretch senior Kate Noftsker (Needham, Mass.) scored a goal for the Red Foxes.
The Stags went 7-14 on free position shots and outshout the Red Foxes 49-28. For Fairfield, 29 of the 49 shots found their way on goal.
Marist concludes the 2009 season with a record of 12-5. The team set new program records in wins (12), consecutive wins (five) and winning percentage (.706).
