FAIRFIELD, CONN. - The Marist women's lacrosse team suffered an 18-12 defeat to the Fairfield Stags on the road on Friday afternoon. Marist senior Stephanie Garland (Long Valley, N.J.) led the Red Foxes with five goals. With the loss, Marist fell to 7-3 overall and 2-2 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
The Stags built a 13-5 lead with 17:54 to play in the first half, as they used a 7-0 run over approximately eight minutes. Garland then cut the lead to 13-7, as she scored the next two goals. She finished the game with four draw controls and a caused turnover.
Marist got as close as four goals, when the score was 16-12 with 1:36 to play in the second half. Senior Kate Noftsker (Needham, Mass.) scored a goal off a Carolyn Sumcizk (Syosset, N.Y.).
Noftsker totaled a goal, an assist, two ground balls and a caused turnover, while Sumcizk had a goal, two assists and two caused turnovers.
Fairfield got key contributions from Rebecca White and Kristen Coleman who each scored five goals in the game.
The Red Foxes will return to action on Tuesday, April 7 in a non-conference tilt with Colgate. The match will reunite two teams who played for one spot in the NCAA Tournament last season. The Raiders prevailed 19-18 on their home field. Tuesday's opening draw is scheduled for 4 p.m.
