POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's lacrosse team dropped its second straight decision on Tuesday afternoon at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field to the Colgate Raiders, 15-9. The game was a rematch of the 2008 NCAA Tournament play-in game as each team won its respective conference, Marist, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and Colgate, the Patriot League.
Senior Stephanie Garland (Long Valley, N.J.) led the Marist offense in points for the seventh game this season; she scored five goals on the afternoon. She and fellow senior Kate Noftsker (Needham, Mass.) extended their point scoring streaks. Noftsker has tallied a point in 15 straight, while Garland has scored a point in her last 14 outings.
Additionally, Garland moved into third place all-time on the Marist career goals list. She passed Allison Occhione, who scored 117 goals in her career. Garland now stands alone in third place with 119 career markers.
The Raiders sprung into action as they opened the game on a 5-0 run. With the score 8-2, Marist went on a 3-0 run to cut the lead to three at 8-5. During the stretch, senior Carolyn Sumcizk (Syosset, N.Y.) scored one goal off a Noftsker assist, while Garland scored the final two goals during the run.
In the second half, Marist would attempt to make a comeback. Trailing 14-5, junior Lauren Ciccarello (Wantagh, N.Y.) notched the first of four consecutive Marist goals that would cut the Colgate lead to 14-8. But it would be too little to late for the Red Foxes. Ciccarello also had five draw controls and three ground balls.
Colgate was led by seven goals from Brie Moran, with three additional tallies from Courtney Miller.
Marist (7-4) will return to action on Tuesday, April 14 in Lewisburg, Pa. as the Red Foxes face the Bucknell Bison. The opening draw is scheduled for 4 p.m.
