TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The Marist baseball team suffered a 16-4 loss to Florida State in NCAA Regional Play on Friday. Freshman center fielder Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.) hit a two-run homer for the Red Foxes, who will return to action with a noon contest against Ohio State on Saturday.
Schwind's home run gave the Red Foxes a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning. After Florida State's Mike McGee hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to give the Seminoles a 4-3 lead, Marist tied the game in the sixth on an RBI double by junior second baseman John Prano (Oviedo, Fla.). However, the Seminoles seized control by scoring four times in the sixth, five times in the seventh and three times in the eighth.
Sophomore third baseman Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) went 3-for-5, and senior left fielder Brian McDonough (Hanover, Mass.) added a pair of hits in four at-bats.
John Gast, who tossed 2.1 innings of relief with five strikeouts, earned the victory for Florida State. Junior right-hander Eric Alessio (Nyack, N.Y.) took the loss for Marist in relief of senior lefty Josh Rickards (Glenolden, Pa.), who started and fanned six in 4.1 innings.
The winner of the Marist-Ohio State game will advance to the losers' bracket final on Sunday, while the loser will have its season come to an end. Ohio State, the third seed, lost 24-8 to second-seeded Georgia in Friday's other first-round contest in the Tallahassee. First pitch is scheduled for 12:04 p.m., and the broadcast on GoRedFoxes.com is scheduled to go on air at 11:45 a.m.
