STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Marist baseball was shut out by Stony Brook in its final non-conference games of the 2009 season on Wednesday, falling by a score of 2-0. Seven Stony Brook pitchers combined on a three-hitter in a game which took just one hour, 54 minutes to complete.
Junior right-hander Richard Cary (Binghamton, N.Y.) started for the Red Foxes and pitched two hitless innings, walking one and striking out two. Sophomore lefty Sean McKeown (Hillsborough, N.J.) followed with a pair of scoreless innings of his own, walking two and striking out one.
Junior right-hander Eric Alessio (Nyack, N.Y.) came on for the fifth, and retired the first two batters he faced. Stony Brook second baseman Chad Rebecca then doubled to left-center, and third baseman Stephen Marino followed with a home run to left field to account for the only two runs of the game. Alessio then finished the fifth and tossed a scoreless sixth.
Sophomore left-hander Jacob Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.) recorded the final out of the inning.
Marist received one single apiece from senior right fielder Brian McDonough (Hanover, Mass.), sophomore second baseman Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) and freshman designated hitter Ben Luderer (River Vale, N.J.).
Alessio fell to 2-3 on the season with the loss. Winning pitcher Jordan Purington, who pitched a scoreless fifth, improved to 1-1, and Jonathan Kalkau recorded the final three outs for his first save of the year.
Marist is now 24-23 overall; Stony Brook is 24-18.
Marist will return to action this weekend with a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series at McCann Field against Niagara. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday followed by a single game on Sunday. The Red Foxes are currently tied for third place in the MAAC, and trail the Purple Eagles for second by one game.
