Marist Football Welcomes 30 Newcomers For 2009 Season

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Marist head football coach Jim Parady announced on Monday that 30 student-athletes will join the Red Foxes' football program this season. The class includes players from 11 states (11 from New York, three from Florida and New Jersey, two from California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania and one from Maryland, Ohio and Virginia). It is comprised of six defensive backs, six defensive linemen, six offensive linemen, three kickers, three wide receivers, two linebackers, two tight ends, one quarterback and one running back.

"As we've expanded our recruiting base, we're proud to bring in a class with recruits from 11 states," Parady said. "Our coaches did an excellent job of bringing in quality student-athletes from across the country. We feel we addressed our needs on the offensive and defensive lines to complement our depth at the skill positions."

Here is the complete list of Marist newcomers:

Alex Burton - Defensive Lineman - 6-2 / 305 - Wexford, Pa. / Pine Richland

Burton won the Pitt Strongman Challenge.

Anthony Calcagni - Tight End - 6-5 / 215 - Thornwood, N.Y. / Westlake

Calcagni was a two-time All-League selection.

Phede Celestin - Offensive Lineman - 6-5 / 265 - Brooklyn, N.Y. / Canarsie

Celestin was his team's Outstanding Lineman and was an All-City selection last season.

Sean Connor - Offensive Lineman - 6-1 / 235 - Staten Island, N.Y. / Curtis

Connor's team won the New York City championship in 2007. Sean is the brother of Marist rising junior offensive lineman Chad Connor.

John DeCourcey - Kicker - 5-10 / 170 - Washingtonville, N.Y. / Washingtonville

DeCourcey played his scholastic ball locally at Washingtonville High School.

Brandyn Devanney - Offensive Lineman - 6-4 / 265 - Penfield, N.Y. / Penfield

Devanney was a Scholar-Athlete and captain of his high school team.

Brian Douglas - Tight End - 6-3 / 220 - Yonkers, N.Y. / Archbishop Stepinac

Douglas is a two-time winner of his team's Lineman of the Year award.

Chad Dubiel - Defensive Back - 6-0 / 195 - Cicero, N.Y. / Cicero-North Syracuse

Dubiel was named his team's Offensive Impact Player last year and his team's Defensive Impact Player in '07.

Peter Evans - Offensive Lineman - 6-4 / 250 - Laconia, N.H. / Laconia

Evans won Most Outstanding Lineman honors as a senior and won a state championship as a junior.

Terrence Fede - Defensive Lineman - 6-3 / 235 - Nyack, N.Y. / Nyack

Fede was named First Team All-State.

James Ferrier - Running Back - 6-0 / 193 - Westtown, N.Y. / Minisink Valley

A captain, Ferrier was named Offensive MVP as a junior and senior.

Mike Hagemann - Defensive Lineman - 6-2 / 230 - Vernon, N.J. / Vernon

Hagemann is a two-year All-League selection who was named All-West Jersey as a senior.

Alex Irastorza - Kicker / Punter - 6-3 / 170 - Miami, Fla. / Christopher Columbus

Irastorza earned fifth place in the NationalKicking.com combine in 2008, hitting a 53-yard field goal in competition.

Chris Katerianakis - Defensive Lineman - 6-0 / 260 - Baltimore, Md. / The Hill School (Pa.)

Katerianakis played his prep ball at The Hill School in Pennsylvania.

Bartley Leneghan - Wide Receiver - 6-4 / 185 - North Royalton, Ohio / Holy Name

Leneghan was named Team MVP as well as First Team All-Conference and First Team All-District.

Nick Mainiero - Defensive Back - 6-1 / 205 - Croton, N.Y. / Croton-Harmon

Mainiero's team was Eastern New York State champions last year, and he was his team's MVP in '07 and '08.

Rocco Manfre - Offensive Lineman - 6-4 / 290 - Neptune, N.J. / Neptune

Manfre was a team captain and Academic All-Shore selection.

Alexander Muzii - Defensive Back - 5-11 / 185 - Boca Raton, Fla. / Boca Raton

Muzii was named his team's Most Valuable Defensive Back and earned All-Conference honors in his career.

Jason Myers - Kicker / Punter - 5-10 / 165 - Chula Vista, Calif. / Mater Dei

Myers was a First Team selection each of the last two years.

Daniel Palacio - Offensive Lineman - 6-2 / 305 - Miami, Fla. / Archbishop Carroll

Palacio's team won the district championship each of the last three years.

Tyler Ramsey - Defensive Back - 5-11 / 190 - Southbridge, Mass. / Southbridge

Ramsey was named League Defensive MVP as a senior and Team MVP as a junior and senior.

Ricky Riscica - Wide Receiver - 6-3 / 210 - Greenwich, Conn. / Greenwich

Riscica was a team captain last year and a two-time All-Conference selection.

Brett Sanchez - Defensive Lineman - 6-3 / 220 - North Hampton, N.H. / Winnacunnet

Sanchez was named his team's MVP as a senior.

Scott Schachter - Defensive End - 6-2 / 220 - Basking Ridge, N.J. / Ridge

Schachter earned All-County, All-Area and All-Conference honors as a junior and senior.

Mike Schuster - Linebacker - 5-11 / 212 - Milford, Pa. / Delaware Valley

Schuster was named a league All-Star.

Isaac Sine - Linebacker - 6-3 / 220 - Chantilly, Va. / Chantilly

Sine was an All-District and All-Region selection.

Anthony Varrichione - Quarterback - 6-4 / 215 - Medway, Mass. / Xaverian

Varrichione was twice named MVP of the Boston College camp.

Jesse Vavricka - Wide Receiver - 6-3 / 195 - Westtown, N.Y. / Minisink Valley

Vavricka was a Second Team All-State selection.

Luther Walker - Defensive Back - 5-9 / 165 - Pasadena, Calif. / St. Francis

Walker played four years of football at St. Francis High School.

Albert Wright - Defensive Back - 6-2 / 200 - Bridgeport, Conn. / Central

Wright named his high school's Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

The Red Foxes will play their first season as a member of the Pioneer Football League this season. Marist will begin its season on Sept. 5 at Sacred Heart, and will play its first PFL game on Sept. 12 at home against Drake.
