NEWARK, N.J. - Sophomore Maria Eduarda Yurgel (Pelotas State RS) and sophomore Kayla O'Donovan (Lynbrook, N.Y.) and Juliana Boras (Curitiba, Brazil) of the Marist women's tennis team won the Flight A and Flight B doubles backdraws respectively late on Friday. The Red Foxes are participating in the NJIT Tournament.
McCarthy and Eduarda Yurgel defeated Laura Mocodeanu and Kirby Riess, 6-4. O'Donovan and Boras prevailed over Elizabeth Stall and Jane Carroll, 6-4.
Singles action began on Saturday with the first round. Matches are being played as eight-game pro-sets. Freshman Kelsey Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) and Eduarda Yurgel both won their Flight A singles matches. Raynor defeated Lili Johnson of Manhattan, 8-6. Eduarda Yurgel won her match via shutout Andrea Collomb of Saint Peter's, 8-0.
In Flight B, Joana Sun (Gales Ferry, Conn.) outlasted Malissa Gilanchi of Hofstra, 9-7. McCarthy won her first round match 8-5. She defeated Maria Mendes from Queens College.
Marist's fifth singles win of the day came courtesy of O'Donovan in Flight D. She rolled past Natalie Schloeder, 8-1.
The Red Foxes will conclude play at the NJIT Tournament on Sunday. Play is scheduled to being at 9 a.m.
