NEWARK, N.J. - Freshman Maria Eduarda Yurgel (Pelotas State, Brazil) of the Marist women's tennis team won three matches on Sunday en route to the Flight A singles crown at the NJIT Tournament. In total the Red Foxes won nine matches on the final day of play. In addition to the Flight A crown, sophomore Juliana Boras (Curitiba, Brazil) and Jeannie Lukin (Kinderhook, N.Y.) faced off in the Flight C backdraw finals.
Eduarda Yurgel won her quarterfinal matchup over Diana Lorentz of Manhattan, 8-5. Her best result of the day came in the semifinals as she defeated Zoe Taylor of Hofstra, 8-4. In the finals Eduarda Yurgel defeated Hofstra's Lauren Clifton, 8-6 to take the flight.
In Flight B, McCarthy cruised through her quartfinal and semifinal matches. She beat Sonia Tsay of Hofstra, 8-3 in the quarterfinals and Hilary Valenzuela of Manhattan, 8-1. In the finals she fell to Erika Goldsmith of Queens College, 8-2.
In the Flight C backdraw, Boras and Lukin reached the finals. Lukin beat Boras, 8-3.
The Red Foxes will return to the courts on Friday, Sept. 18. Marist will participate in the Stony Brook Classic Tournament at the University of Stony Brook from Sept. 18 - 20.
