STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Marist women's tennis team won a total of five matches on Saturdy at the Stony Brook Classic. The Red Foxes competed in singles action against five different colleges from the eastern seaboard. Sophomore Erin McCarthy (Salem, N.J.) and freshman Kelsey Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) each won two matches on the day.
The Red Foxes struggled in their first set of matches against Fairleigh Dickinson. Marist's fourth, fifth and sixth singles players each fell in straight sets to the Knights.
Marist's top half of the lineup came through in its second session match against Long Island and West Virginia players. Maria Eduarda Yurgel (Pelotas State, Brazil) defeated Aleksandra Pavolic from LIU, 6-2, 6-7, (14-12). The third set was played as a tiebreak. McCarthy won her first match of the day, an eight-game pro-set against Liv Petterson, 8-4. Raynor bested Stephanie Elie in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
After they dropped three matches to Army in the fourth session of the day, the Red Foxes wrapped up the event with two wins over Navy. Raynor and McCarthy defeated Brittany Boucher and Stefanie Ton respectively. Raynor's score at second singles was 6-4, 6-1, while McCarthy's victory came by the score of 6-1, 6-2.
Marist will return to action at the Eastern Championships at West Point. The tournament will run from Friday, Sept. 25 - 27.
