NEW HAVEN, CONN. - Junior diver Brian Bolstad (Highland, N.Y.) of the Marist men's swimming and diving team set school records in both the 1- and 3-meter diving events in a dual meet victory at Southern Connecticut on Saturday. Bolstad won the 1-meter board with a score of 319.50 and the 3-meter event with a mark of 374.70. The Red Foxes defeated the Owls 141-88 in the meet.
Both of the old records were set last season at Seton Hall in the regular season finale on Jan. 31, 2009. Senior Mitchell Katz (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) held the 1-meter record of 314.03, while Bolstad possessed the 3-meter record with a mark of 371.25.
As a team, the Red Foxes swept the top three spots in two events - the 200-yd. backstroke and the 500-yd. freestyle. In the 200-yd. backstroke, senior Kevin Quinn (Neponsit, N.Y.), freshman Thomas Byrnes (Rhinebeck, N.Y.) claimed first through third places. Quinn finished with a time of 1:59.10, Collins touched with a time of 2:02.91 and Byrnes swam to a 2:07.15 mark. The trio in the 500-yd. freestyle was led by junior Steven Vendetta (South Windsor, Conn.) who came in first with a time of 4:50.37. He was followed by freshman Stephen Miller (Downington, Pa.) and sophomore Patrick Shea (Peabody, Mass.) in second and third places respectively.
Marist also took the top two spots in the opening event of the day, the 200-yd. medley relay. Sophomore Kevin Shoemaker (Saucon Valley, Pa.), freshman Matt Marrington (Farmington, Conn.) and freshman Charlie Pataffi (Middletown, N.J.) finished in first with a time of 1:40.88. Collins, sophomore Joe Papiro (Southbury, Conn.) freshman Samuel Nowack (Middletown, Conn.) and classmate Tyler Ferraro (Southbury, Conn.) finished second with a time of 1:44.25.
Vendetta won his second event of the afternoon in the 200-yd. freestyle, where he finished with a time of 1:44.97.
In the 200-yd. butterfly, Shoemaker swam to an individual victory with a personal best time. He touched the final wall with a time of 1:54.52.
The win for the Red Foxes snapped a five meet losing streak. Marist now stands at 3-6 during the 2009-10 campaign.
The swimming and diving programs will return to the pool on Sunday, Jan. 24 when it takes on the University of Maryland-Baltimore County. The first event is scheduled to begin at noon.
