LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The Marist women's tennis team won 18 matches on Sunday as part of a round robin tournament hosted by Siena College in Loudonville, N.Y. The Red Foxes were paced by sophomores Kelsey Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) and Joana Sun (Gales Ferry, Conn.) won a pair of matches to claim the Flight B doubles draw, while Sun won three singles matches as well.
In the doubles draw, Raynor and Sun began by with an 8-0 shutout win over Colene Alexis and Shakaya Slay. Then the pair defeated Carly Holloway and Danielle Crill of Siena 8-4 to take the flight.
Seniors Jeannie Lukin (Kinderhook, N.Y.) and Joanna Macaluso (Stormville, N.Y.) also won a pair of doubles matches in Flight C. In the first match Lukin and Macaluso defeated Angel Lawrence and Shimiere Douglas 8-0, and posted an 8-5 victory over Elora Benfer and Brittany Filip of Siena.
Freshman Marielle Campbell (Patterson, N.Y.) and senior Retta Byron (Scottsdale, Ariz.) notched Marists' third doubles shutout of the day with an 8-0 triumph over Jessica Asslein and Jennifer Messing of Siena. The match was contested in Flight C.
Junior Maria Eduarda Yurgel (Pelotas State, Brazil) rounded out a perfect 6-0 doubles day for the Red Foxes with an 8-2 victory over Arianna Van Sluytman and Ewa Opala.
The singles matches also featured eight-game pro-sets. The Red Foxes were unblemished in both Flights B and C. Sun was a triple-winner in Flight B and did not surrender more than four games to her opponent in a single match. Lukin and Campbell each won two matches for Marist in Flight C.
Marist will conclude its fall season this weekend at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Tournament hosted by Dartmouth. The event is slated to run from Oct. 22-24 in Hanover, N.H.
