POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's tennis team won eight matches on the first day of the Marist Invitational. The Red Foxes welcomed five other schools to the East Campus Tennis Pavilion on Saturday including Albany, Fordham, Providence, Saint Peter's and Siena. Sophomore Maria Eduarda Yurgel (Pelotas State, Brazil) and Erin McCarthy (Salem, N.J.) are in the Flight A doubles finals, while freshman Marielle Campbell (Patterson, N.Y.) and senior Jeannie Lukin (Kinderhook, N.Y.) are in the Flight C doubles finals.
Yurgel and McCarthy won a pair of matches on Saturday to earn their way to the Flight A finals on Sunday. In the quarterfinals they defeated Krysten Chen and Linnea Enoh-Jausson of Saint Peter's 8-3. They defeated Mia Fiocca and Sarah Tremaine of Fordham 8-3.
In Flight C, Campbell and Lukin beat Jennifer Mullen and Monika Chao of Fordham 8-2 in the quarterfinals, before the Marist pair bested Rachel Drake and Melissa Coughlin of Albany 8-4.
Yurgel also won her singles match against Fiocca of Fordham in straight sets. The final score was 6-4, 6-2. The contest was a part of the Flight A singles quarterfinals.
In Flight B singles, sophomore Joana Sun (Gales Ferry, Conn.) posted a three-set win over Linnea Enoh-Jausson of Saint Peter's. After Sun lost the first set, she notched wins in consecutive sets. The final score was 4-6, 6-0, 10-8.
Lukin and senior Juliana Boas (Curitiba, Brazil) picked up wins in the opening round of the tournament in Flight C and D, respectively.
The Red Foxes will finish play at the Marist Invitational on Sunday, Oct. 10. Play will consist of the doubles finals, singles semifinals and finals as well as back draw matches.
