STORRS, CONN. - The Connecticut Huskies scored five straight goals in a span of 12 minutes Wednesday to take down the Marist women's lacrosse team 15-8 at the Sherman Complex. The Red Foxes are now 2-1 on the season. Jori Procaccini (Long Valley, N.J.) and Kelly Condon (Roslyn, Pa.) each tallied four points in the game for Marist on two goals and two assists apiece.
Lindsay Rinefierd (Smithtown, N.Y.) also had two goals for Marist. Morgan Dillon (Freeport, N.Y.) and Erin Wilson (Ada, Mich.) and Lauren Ciccarello (Wantagh, N.Y.) each recorded three draw controls.
Marist took an early 2-0 lead as Dillon scored 14 seconds into the game, followed by Procaccini's first tally of the game at the 24:42 mark. UConn (5-1) tied the game 2-2 with 21:21 to go in the first half as M.E. Lapham assisted on goals by Ashley Michelides and Kiersten Tupper. The Red Foxes went ahead 3-2 with 20:41 left in the first half on Procaccini's second goal, assisted by Condon. The Huskies responded with four straight tallies, taking a 6-3 lead with 6:18 remaining in the half. Rinefierd then scored back-to-back goals for Marist, making the score 6-5 with 4:05 left in the first. Condon then tied the game, 6-6, with a goal at the 2:18 mark of the half. The score would remain tied through halftime.
The two teams traded goals to start the second half, making the score 7-7 with 26:49 remaining in the game. After Condon tied the game 7-7, UConn went on a big run. Tupper gave the Huskies an 8-7 lead with 25:07 to go, followed by goals from Stephanie Norton, Jillian Cerar, and two from Lauren Sparks that put UConn ahead 12-7 with 13:06 left in the game. Marist ended the Huskies' run with Kramer's goal at the 11:50 mark of the second half, making the score 12-8. UConn added three goals in the final six minutes for the 15-8 win.
The Huskies outshot Marist 33-16 for the game, and 23-5 in the second half. Marist held a 15-13 edge in ground balls. Marist goalie Alyssa Littin (Coronado, Calif.) and UConn's Jenna Moulton each had six saves. Lapham led the Huskies with four goals, with Cerar adding three tallies.
Marist returns to action Saturday against Yale at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field at 12 p.m.
