SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - The Marist water polo team moved to 4-9 on the 2010 season Saturday, losing 13-7 to #8 Loyola Marymount and 11-9 to Cal State Bakersfield at the Aztec Invitational at San Diego State. Senior Kristen Barnett (Houston, Texas) scored six goals on the day, with Angie Rampton (Simi Valley, Calif.) and Samantha Swartz (Harleysville, Pa.) adding three goals apiece.
The Red Foxes opened the day against the Lions of Loyola Marymount. Marist led 3-2 after the first quarter, but Loyola Marymount scored four goals in the second quarter to lead 6-5 at halftime. The Lions added four more goals in the third quarter to go ahead 10-7, then shut out Marist 3-0 in the fourth for the 13-7 win. Barnett had a team-high three steals and two field blocks to go with two goals. Rampton had two goals and two assists. Goalie Jessica Getchius (Simi Valley, Calif.) made eight saves and had one steal.
Marist then took on the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners in its second game of the day. Once again, the Red Foxes led after the first quarter, taking a 2-1 lead. Marist then added four goals in the second to go ahead 6-5 at halftime. The Red Foxes then went cold in the third quarter. Cal State Bakersfield scored four goals in the third quarter to take a 9-6 lead. Marist scored three goals in the fourth, but it wouldn't be enough as the Roadrunners won 11-9. Barnett had four goals for the Red Foxes, with Swartz adding a pair.
The Red Foxes return to action at the Aztec Invitational on Sunday, taking on #3 California at 12:15 p.m. and UC-San Diego at 4 p.m.
