BETHLEHEM, PA. - A 6-1 run over the final 11:53 of the first half proved to be the difference as the Marist women's lacrosse team defeated the Lehigh Mountain Hawks 8-6 at Ulrich Sports Complex on Tuesday afternoon. The Red Foxes' win snaps a five-game losing streak. Sophomore attack Kelly Condon (Roslyn, Pa.) led all scorers with four goals.
Lehigh (8-2) opened the scoring with a goal by Inneke Carmola with 25:22 remaining in the first half. Lauren Dykstra then scored back-to-back goals to put the Mountain Hawks ahead 3-0 with 19:24 to go in the half. Marist (3-5) got on the board at the 19:07 mark of the first half as Condon scored her first of the game to make the score 3-1. Ariel Kramer (Syracuse, N.Y.) then scored on a free-position shot with 17:05 remaining in the half to make the score 3-2.
Allison Thomas put Lehigh back up by two, 4-2, with a free-position goal with 13:16 to go in the first. That would be the Mountain Hawks last goal of the half. Condon scored her second goal of the game at the 9:21 mark of the first to make the score 4-3. Morgan Dillon (Freeport, N.Y.) then tied the game 4-4 with 1:21 left in the half with her only goal of the game. Marist then added two goals by Condon and Lindsay Rinefierd (Smithtown, N.Y.) in the final 30 seconds of the half to take a 6-4 halftime lead. The Red Foxes outshot Lehigh 15-10 in the first half, committing only three turnovers to the Mountain Hawks' 11.
The Mountain Hawks scored first in the second half, as Carmola scored her second goal of the game at the 23:40 mark to make the score 6-5. Marist answered almost nine minutes later as Kramer scored with 14:43 to go in the game to make the score 7-5. The defenses took over in the second half, forcing a combined 17 turnovers. Lehigh once again got within a goal with 10:52 remaining when Anna Patterson assisted on a Megan Kelly goal to make the score 7-6. Condon then scored her fourth goal at the 8:02 mark to make the score 8-6. The Mountain Hawks had three shots to tie the game in the final minutes, but could not find the back of the net.
Lehigh outshot Marist 28-21 for the game, and also held a 12-4 advantage in draw controls. Each team collected 22 ground balls. Marist goalie Alyssa Littin (Coronado, Calif.) made six saves for the Red Foxes, while MaryLeah DiNisco had seven saves.
Marist returns to Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field on Saturday with a 12 p.m. game against Siena to open Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play.
